Bullying

English 1312 Topic Proposal:  Bullying
william la rue

The general topic I would like to focus on is bullying.  This topic is relevant to my discourse community because it can potentially touch anyone- regardless of sex, age, race, or social status.  Moreover, social media is enabling bullies to inflict emotional pain on their victims twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week; "virtually" anonymously.  I am an avid viewer of "Dr. Drew" on HLN and it was he who brought this issue to my attention.  His headlines featuring the resulting deaths of young people both shocked and saddened me.  Bullying has become an epidemic.  By investigating this topic I hope to:  better understand the underlying psychology of the victim as well as those who victimize, learn more about the warning signs,  and find out what needs to be done to curb the issue as well as what preventative measures can and/or should be implemented.
Through my initial investigation on this topic I learned that some colleges and universities are now implementing rules and regulations regarding interactions between their respective students.  In response to said actions, student-related organizations are protesting, claiming a direct violation of their First Amendment rights.  As students ourselves, this serves as an interesting and controversial issue. I also learned that this is a global issue, affecting many countries.
